A Mexican teenage boy killed by US agents at a border crossing has infuriated people on both sides, and the Mexican government has lodged a formal complaint and called for a review of US rules of engagement. Dozens of mourners at Hernandez's funeral Wednesday vented their rage at the US, including the boy's father Jesus Hernandez, who hoped that "justice is done," decrying what he called a senseless murder. "This is a homicide and a racist act, not self defense as the (US Border Patrol) insists," said Hernandez, who wept as he clung to his son's open casket in their modest dirt-floor home. President Felipe Calderon on Tuesday strongly condemned the death of the boy and called on the US to fully investigate the incident and "punish those held responsible." The 14-year-old Sergio Hernandez was shot Monday on the Mexican side of the border in the frontier city of Ciudad Juarez as he and other youths were running from US border patrol agents. Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa said it was not clear if the youths had attacked the agents. And Hernandez said several witnesses reported that the US agent "crossed the river and killed him (Sergio) in Mexico." With Mexican politicians and residents near the border seething, Espinosa said Mexico was also "insisting on an exhaustive investigation" into the incident. "There are specific protocols regarding violence on the border," Espinosa said in a statement. "We are asking for a review of these protocols that allow us to have a clear set of guidelines" for US and Mexican authorities. |
