Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor (C) waves to people after winning the election at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in Hong Kong, south China, March 26, 2017. (Xinhua/Wang Shen) Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Leung Chun-ying said on Monday that he and his team will give the winner of the chief executive election the best possible support to bring about a smooth transition. Leung told the media after meeting Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor at the Chief Executive's Office that one of the most important tasks for the rest of his term is to ensure a smooth transition of the HKSAR government. Lam won the election of the fifth-term chief executive of Hong Kong SAR on Sunday with 777 of 1,163 valid votes. After the appointment by the central government, she will take oath of office on July 1 and become the fifth-term chief executive. The chief executive election was conducted in accordance with the Basic Law, the relevant decisions of the National People's Congress Standing Committee and the election laws of Hong Kong, Leung said. The election demonstrated once again the successful implementation of the principle of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" with a high degree of autonomy, he said. Leung also said, according to the Basic Law, the chief executive is not only the head of the SAR government but also the head of the SAR, carrying great responsibilities. He calls on the whole community to fully support the new chief executive and the new SAR government, and work together to realize the potential for a better Hong Kong. Lam told the press that apart from her priority to unite the society, she will also try to improve the relationship between the executive and the legislature. She also said this year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, and the transition work includes holding the related celebration events successfully.
