In its annual list of "regressive democracies" released on November 22, the International IDEA said that the United States was included in the list, and that the country's "significant deterioration" began in 2019. But the "historic turning point" is between 2020 and 2021. The report also points to the growing polarization in the United States and changes to voting laws in state legislatures that are "disproportionately affecting minority rights in a negative way."
